My lab will work to construct sequenced-based phylogenetic hypotheses for Ephedra and the Gnetales as part of a larger effort of resolving seed plant phylogeny. We are part of a multi-institutional team of 12 PI's and Co-PI's lead by Sarah Mathews addressing an important unresolved node of the tree of life (seed plants/ gymnosperms). This node is critical to understanding a number of important plant evolutionary questions such as what are the closest relatives of flowering plants, and what are the relationships within seed plants. We will employ both molecular and morphological matrices (incl. extinct members) to test hypotheses that have been inferred in seed plant analyses. Seeking students!
